6.  GC-MS Analysis of the Leaf Essential Oil of Mentha rotundifolia, a Traditional Herbal Medicine in Morocco

Abstract:

The aim of the present study was to investigate the essential oil of Mentha rotundifolia from Morocco. The leaves of Mentha rotundifolia have been collected in the region of Boulmane (Skoura) in Morocco, dried in open air for 15 days and kept fresh for extraction. The essential oils have been extracted by the hydrodistillation method and analysed by chromatographic techniques: chromatograpy in gas phase with flame ionization detection (GC-FID), and chromatography in gas phase coupled with mass spectrometry (GC/MS), to determine the chemical composition of the volatile fraction and identify the chemotype. The essential oil yield and the amount of total identified oil components of this study were 1.54% and 90.4%, respectively. The major component was menthol (40.50%), other predominant constituents were identified as: menthone (5.0%), menthyl acetate (4.5%), menthofuran (4.2%), piperitone oxyde (3.8%), linalyl acetate (3.5%), neomenthol (3.2%), piperitone (3.1%), isomenthone(2.5%), 1,8-cineole (2.4%), linalool (2.0%), limonene (1.8%), geraniol (1.7%), myrcene (1.6%), geranyl acetate (1.5%) and trans-sabinene hydrate (1.4%).
